ICD-10, which refers to the tenth version of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, is a medical coding and classification system that is used by approximately 27 countries. The system was developed by the World Health Organization (WHO), an agency of the United Nations that was founded in 1948 to focus efforts on international public health concerns.

In the United States, ICD-10 replaced ICD-9 in October of 2015. The system, which is used on a variety of healthcare records and reports such as reimbursement claims, quality records, and utilization reviews, contains over 14,000 medical codes. Additional sub-classification codes bring the total to 16,000.
